Remembering 2004 Boston Red Sox Star Dave McCarty: A Tribute to a Beloved Major Leaguer and His Impact on the Game

Dave McCarty, a beloved member of the 2004 Boston Red Sox team that won the World Series, passed away at the age of 54 in Oakland, California due to a cardiac event. McCarty was honored on April 9 at Fenway Park along with other members of the 2004 team to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their World Series win and to pay tribute to Tim Wakefield and his wife, Stacy, who both recently passed away from cancer.

Throughout his career, McCarty played in 630 games, hitting .242 with 36 home runs and 175 RBIs. He was selected by the Minnesota Twins as the No. 3 draft pick in 1991 out of Stanford and went on to play in the Major Leagues for 11 seasons with seven different teams. After retiring as a player, McCarty worked as an analyst for NESN from July 2005 through the 2008 season.

Kevin Youkilis, McCarty’s teammate, remembered him on social media as a great father, husband, teammate, and friend. He thanked McCarty for teaching him how to be a Big Leaguer during their time together on the Red Sox. Many others within the baseball community also mourned McCarty’s death and celebrated his contributions both on and off the field.
