The start of the West Indies team’s innings was truly astonishing, and it must be witnessed to be believed. Despite losing Brandon King early in the second over, the hosts continued to build momentum with Johnson Charles and Nicholas Pooran swiftly finding their rhythm.
In the third over, Charles hit three boundaries which seemed to inspire Pooran to up the ante even more. Pooran then unleashed a spectacular display of hitting, scoring 36 runs off Azmatullah Omarzai’s over including a mix of boundaries, extras, and sixes.
This remarkable feat marked the fifth time in Men’s T20I history that an over has gone for 36 runs, the second time at a Men’s World Cup. The partnership between Charles and Pooran reached 50 runs with the final six of the over.
The onslaught didn’t stop there as the pair continued to pile on the runs, taking West Indies to 92/1 at the end of the powerplay, setting a new record for the highest Powerplay total in Men’s T20 World Cup history. The performance by Charles and Pooran was truly exceptional and set the stage for an incredible innings by the West Indies team.
