This Sunday, Mexico will hold its largest elections in history with over 98 million people called to vote on more than 20,000 positions. The electorate will decide the successor to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and renew both chambers of Congress, elect eight governors, and choose the head of government for the capital. Thousands of local offices are also up for grabs.

The electoral campaign has been marred by a wave of violence, with dozens of candidates assassinated, threats, kidnappings, and the influence of drug trafficking cartels. The main presidential candidates include Claudia Sheinbaum, former head of Government of Mexico City, Xochitl Galvez, and Jorge Álvarez Máynez, each representing different political parties.

The outcome of these elections will determine the direction of the country’s future. In addition to the presidential race, 500 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 128 senators are up for grabs, with potential implications for constitutional reforms. The outgoing president is aiming for his party to regain dominance in the Legislature to push through his proposed constitutional initiatives.

The election will also see the renewal of governorships in eight states and various local positions across the country. Parties are vying for control in different regions, with a focus on expanding their influence or maintaining power in key areas. The number of positions in dispute is unprecedented, highlighting the significance of this election for Mexico’s political landscape.
