A 24-year-old woman has given birth to triplets at week 36, despite initially being diagnosed with twins. One of the girls weighed just 1.9 kg while the other two weighed 2.6 kg each. On July 2, Hai Phong Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital announced that the pregnant woman, who was carrying her first child, was admitted due to lower abdominal pain. Doctors diagnosed her with a rare high-risk pregnancy – a spontaneous triplet pregnancy with one fetus slow to develop. To ensure safety, she underwent a cesarean section.

The three babies were born with good reflexes, but the 1.9 kg girl showed signs of jaundice and was transferred to the neonatal department for monitoring. All four children and the mother are currently in stable health and have been discharged from the hospital. The woman expressed surprise upon learning she was carrying triplets. Initially, a private clinic diagnosed her with twins, but at 32 weeks, a thorough ultrasound at Hai Phong Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital confirmed triplets.

According to Dr Nguyen Thi Hong Anh of Hai Phong Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, natural triplets are rare, with a rate of 1/8,000 births recorded in world literature. While cases of natural triplets are occasionally seen in Vietnamese hospitals, many multiple pregnancies today are the result of in vitro fertilization (IVF), allowing for choices regarding the number of fetuses, gender selection, and screening for abnormalities. Pregnant women carrying multiples should pay close attention to their diet to meet the increased nutritional needs of the fetuses. Adequate rest, relaxation, and avoidance of overwork are also crucial in reducing the risk of pregnancy complications.

Regular check-ups and close monitoring by doctors are essential to assess fetus development and maternal health, enabling the prompt detection and management of any abnormal signs or symptoms.
