During a routine arrest in Dalfsen (Overijssel), a Malinois shepherd from a special unit of the Dutch police suddenly turned against its handlers, prompting one of the officers to use his service weapon to take out the dog. The arrest team had been called to the scene after a man posted pictures on social media showing him posing with a gun, and refused to surrender despite being known to the police.

In an attempt to incapacitate the suspect, the officers used special non-lethal ammunition that delivers an impact similar to a punch from a boxer. However, during the chaos of the intervention, the police dog attacked its own team members, forcing one officer to use his weapon to stop it. A police spokesperson noted that such behavior from police dogs is rare as they are usually well-trained and friendly with their handlers.

The injured dog underwent emergency surgery but its current condition remains unknown. The arrested man has a criminal history and was convicted of serious abuse of a child last year and was released pending an appeal in that case. The incident is currently under investigation and no further details have been released at this time.
