Rapid Expansion of Quantum Technology in India: Emerging as a Global Leader

India is rapidly emerging as a leader in quantum technology, with the growth of over forty startups in the field over the past two years. This rapid expansion indicates the growing potential of India in the global tech landscape, according to Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology.

Recently, a meeting was held to discuss the 100-day action plan for the Department of Science & Technology, during which Dr. Singh highlighted the importance of the National Quantum Mission. He stated that India is now on par with some of the leading nations in quantum technology and that the mission aims to establish India as a global leader and foster advancements in quantum communication.

One notable startup in Bangalore, QuNu Labs, incubated by IIT Madras, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Technology Development Board to develop security products using quantum technologies. The growth of such startups is a testament to India’s thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem and its commitment to innovation.

In addition to this, Dr. Singh also mentioned the increase in women’s participation in extramural research and development in recent years, a result of government initiatives to promote women in STEM fields. Approximately 300 women scientists are currently receiving research grants under the ASPIRE scheme. This reflects India’s efforts towards gender equality and encouraging more women to pursue careers in science and technology.

The number of startups in India has skyrocketed from just a few hundred in 2014 to over 1.25 lakh today, including over 110 unicorns. This growth is a point of pride for India and has significantly improved its position in the Global Innovation Index, moving from 81st place in 2015 to 40th place in 2023.
