A landslide occurred in southern Switzerland over the weekend, burying several houses in Ticino and resulting in the loss of three lives. The deceased were German holidaymakers, two women aged 73 and 76 from Baden-Württemberg. The victims were found in the aftermath of the landslide in Fontana, in the Maggia Valley. It was revealed that at least two of the three victims knew each other, although due to the destruction caused by the landslide, determining who lived in which house was challenging.

In addition to the confirmed casualties, five other individuals remain missing in Ticino following the storm, and search operations are ongoing. Severe weather conditions had led to the Maggia River sweeping away a bridge near Cevio, making access to the upper Maggia Valley only possible by air. Military personnel were deployed to the region to aid with cleanup efforts.

The disaster left one section of the valley without electricity and drinking water on Monday. Meanwhile, in neighboring Valais, heavy rainfall and flooding of the Rhône River caused significant property damage.
