A dangerous raccoon infected with rabies was discovered in the town of Pamelia, Watertown, New York. Fortunately, no humans or pets were exposed to the deadly disease. Rabies is a brain and spinal cord attacker that can take weeks to months to manifest after exposure. Quick treatment following exposure can prevent the development of rabies in humans and pets who have received their vaccinations on time. While any mammal can contract rabies, it most commonly affects bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes.

To avoid rabies exposure, children should be educated to keep a safe distance from unfamiliar animals, both wild and domestic. Pet owners should also avoid leaving food outside that could attract wildlife to their property. In case of an animal encounter, wounds should be cleaned thoroughly with soap and water before seeking medical attention immediately. It’s crucial to keep pets up-to-date on their vaccinations to prevent the spread of rabies. There are vaccination clinics available for pets that pet owners can attend for their furry friends’ protection.

The Jefferson County Public Health Service will host a rabies vaccination clinic on June 20th at Jefferson County Dog Control from 5 pm to 7 pm. More information about this event can be found on their website at www.jcphs.org. It is essential to take precautions against the dangers of rabies while ensuring both human and pet safety remains a top priority.
