In the event of flooding, individuals who rely on private wells for their drinking water should take precautions to ensure the safety of their water supply. First and foremost, they should contact a licensed well contractor to inspect and make necessary repairs to the well. This may include fixing any cracks, extending the casing above flood levels, or replacing the vented well cap with a watertight cover. Proper grading around the well is also crucial to prevent water from pooling and contaminating the supply.

In addition to seeking professional assistance, individuals should also take steps to protect their well in case of flooding. They should stock up on clean water that can last for a few days and turn off power to the well pump to prevent floodwater from entering the plumbing system. If time is limited, covering the well with a heavy plastic bag or sheeting and securing it with electrical tape can help reduce contamination.

If floodwater does reach the well, it should be assumed to be contaminated and not used for drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth until it recedes. Professionals should then inspect and decontaminate the well before it can be safely used again.
