Vermont and New Hampshire health officials are currently investigating a possible measles exposure in the Upper Valley. Although no cases of measles have been confirmed in either state, New Hampshire’s public health division is looking into a report of an international traveler who contracted the disease shortly after visiting the town of Hanover.

The traveler may have been infectious while in public places in Hanover from June 20-22, including Dartmouth College’s campus. The health department has released a list of locations where potential exposure could have occurred during those dates, including: June 20-22: Dartmouth College campus, Hanover; June 20-22: The Hanover Inn, 2 E Wheelock St., Hanover; June 20, 3 p.m.: Hanover Scoops, 57 S Main St., Hanover; June 20-22: Lou’s Restaurant and Bakery, 30 S Main St., Hanover (one meal, unknown date and time); and June 22: Dartmouth Coach Bus from Hanover to Boston Logan Airport (unknown time).

For individuals who were in the area on those specific dates, officials recommend monitoring for symptoms if they are not vaccinated or have not had the measles in the past. Symptoms to watch for include high fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes several days before developing a body rash. If feeling unwell, individuals are advised to call their healthcare provider before seeking treatment to prevent possible spread of the virus.

Experts emphasize that measles is a preventable disease and that the vaccine for it is both safe and effective. If anyone has questions, comments, or tips regarding the situation, they are encouraged to send a message to the appropriate health agencies.
