Porto’s players celebrated a victory in the Portuguese Cup on May 26, 2024, tossing their coach Sergio Conceicao in the air in jubilation. However, that joy was short-lived as Conceicao has now announced his departure from the club after seven years in charge.
The decision to leave comes after Conceicao had recently extended his contract, but the arrival of former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas as club president prompted his exit. Reports suggest that Conceicao may be on his way to French club Marseille, with his deputy Vitor Bruno being considered as his successor at Porto.
During his tenure at Porto, Conceicao led the team to 11 trophies, including three league titles in 2018, 2020, and 2022, along with the recent Portuguese Cup win. Despite these successes, his final season saw Porto finish third in the league, 18 points behind champions Sporting Lisbon.
A former Portuguese international winger, Conceicao began his playing career at Porto before moving on to play in Italy with clubs like Lazio, Parma, and Inter Milan. After retiring from playing in 2010, he transitioned into coaching, starting as an assistant at Standard Liege and eventually landing at Porto in 2017 after stints at various clubs.
