A class-action lawsuit has been filed against soda brand Poppi by a consumer named Kristin Cobbs. The lawsuit alleges that Poppi drinks do not provide the gut health benefits as much as their marketing implies. According to the lawsuit, Poppi drinks contain only around 2 grams of prebiotic agave inulin fiber, which is not enough to provide any real benefit. Research cited in the lawsuit shows that consuming 7.5 grams of agave inulin daily for three weeks was insufficient to confer any meaningful prebiotic benefit.

Cobbs is seeking relief for herself and other similar customers. In response, Poppi, based in Austin, Texas, stated that it stands behind its products and believes the lawsuit is baseless. The company mentioned being on a mission to revolutionize soda for the next generation of soda drinkers and providing a tasting experience that millions of people have come to enjoy.

However, Poppi did not respond to requests from Associated Press for comment. Poppi is among the many brands in the rapidly growing category of functional beverages, which claim to enhance health and wellness. U.S. sales of prebiotic and probiotic drinks saw a significant increase last year according to data from consulting firm AlixPartners.
