Richard ‘Rick’ Slayman, 62, has passed away after receiving a genetically modified pig kidney transplant. The Guardian reports that his death occurred two months after the intervention at Massachusetts General Hospital, which stated that there was no direct correlation between the operation and his passing. Initially, surgeons believed that the pig kidney would last for at least two years.

The transplant team at Massachusetts General Hospital expressed their deep sadness over Slayman’s death and offered their condolences to his family. Slayman was the first living person to receive this particular procedure, as previous experiments had only involved temporarily transplanting pig kidneys into brain-dead recipients. Slayman had undergone a kidney transplant in 2018 but faced complications last year, leading his doctors to suggest a pig kidney transplant.
