Philadelphia is kicking off Pride Month with a city-wide fundraiser, led by gyms across the city. The event, called the Philly Fitness Pride Kickoff, aims to raise money for the Mazzoni Center, an organization that provides resources to LGBTQIA+ individuals in the area.

The idea for this fundraiser came from one of Mazzoni Center’s board members, Dylan Van Duyne, who is also a fitness instructor. Van Duyne wanted to combine his love for fitness with supporting a cause that he is passionate about.

Eleven local gyms are participating in the weekend-long event, which will take place on Saturday, June 1st and Sunday, June 2nd. Each gym will offer a variety of classes led by instructors who are committed to promoting inclusivity and acceptance in their fitness community.

One of the gyms involved in the fundraiser is Unite Fitness in Rittenhouse, where Master Coach Parker Lloyd will be teaching a class. The session will involve a mix of cardio and strength training, set to an energizing playlist that will make participants feel like they are at a concert. As a nonbinary coach, Lloyd is passionate about ensuring that everyone in their class feels confident and welcome.

Lloyd believes in empowering people to discover their strength and capabilities, often surprising them with what they can achieve. They aim to help individuals feel empowered and stronger than they originally thought, underscoring the importance of feeling confident and capable in their fitness journey.

The Philly Fitness Pride Kickoff is an opportunity for residents of Philadelphia to come together and support an important cause while also getting some exercise. It’s also a reminder that everyone deserves access to health care and mental health services regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
