Philadelphia is set to experience its first heat emergency of the year starting on Thursday, with an expected duration from 8 a.m. on Thursday until midnight on Saturday. The forecast predicts high temperatures that will persist throughout the weekend, prompting Interim Health Commissioner Frank Franklin to declare the emergency in response to projected heat index maximums.

Heat index values in the area are expected to range from 95 to 100 degrees from Wednesday evening through Saturday morning, peaking on Friday. Moving into Sunday evening, heat index values could range from 100 to 105 degrees, posing a potentially dangerous situation. The weather forecast predicts temperatures of 93 degrees on Thursday, up to 97 degrees on Friday, 96 degrees on Saturday, and 98 degrees on Sunday in Philadelphia.

Cooling centers will be open in the city during the emergency, and officials advise those without air conditioning to seek refuge with family or friends who have cooling facilities. The Corporation for the Aging’s Heatline will also be available between 8:30 a.m. and midnight for individuals with questions about heat-related medical issues.

During heat health emergencies, the Health Department emphasizes the importance of checking on elderly community members who may be at increased risk of heat-related illness or even death. The city will ramp up outreach efforts to support individuals experiencing homelessness during this period of extreme heat.

In response to the impending emergency, residents are urged to take precautions such as staying hydrated, wearing loose-fitting clothing and sunglasses, avoiding direct sunlight when possible, and seeking shade whenever possible.

It is important for everyone in Philadelphia to take necessary steps during this heat wave to ensure their safety and well-being.
