In response to the approaching expiration of potassium iodide tablets distributed by public health agencies, officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Health are urging residents near the Beaver Valley Power Station to take advantage of an upcoming opportunity to obtain new supplies for free. These tablets, also known as KI, are a critical component of preparedness for radiological emergencies.

Acting Secretary of Health Debra Bogen emphasized the importance of keeping medications up-to-date to protect one’s health. While such emergencies are rare, having unexpired tablets on hand is essential for potentially affected individuals. Residents living or working within 10 miles of Pennsylvania’s four active nuclear power plants can obtain the tablets by visiting the distribution center at the Beaver Valley Mall or by contacting the Department of Health at 1-877-PA-HEALTH. They can also exchange expiring products for safe disposal of the tablets. No appointments are necessary for picking up or exchanging tablets at the June 12 event.

This initiative is a proactive measure to safeguard the health of Pennsylvanians in the event of a radiological emergency. It is crucial for residents to stay informed and prepared for any potential risks in their area. The distribution center at the Beaver Valley Mall will be open on June 12 from 2 to 7 p.m., offering free potassium iodide tablets to those who need them most.
