The 549-meter long and 44-meter wide bridge, situated above the Garonne river, connects Floirac on the right bank with Bègles on the left bank. This bridge is Europe’s widest and will be accessible to its first users starting on Wednesday, July 3.

As a technician completes the finishing touches to the road markings, project manager Bertrand Arnauld de Sartre oversees the final preparations. He explains that this bridge is designed not just for motorists but also for pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge has two lanes designated for cars, two lanes for buses, and a dedicated cycle path that is accompanied by a spacious forecourt for pedestrians. In total, this pedestrian and cyclist-friendly space accounts for nearly half of the entire bridge’s surface area.

The bridge’s design reflects a commitment to creating a more inclusive transportation infrastructure that prioritizes the safety and convenience of all modes of transportation. By providing designated lanes and paths for different modes of commuting, this bridge aims to promote sustainable and active forms of transportation while ensuring smooth flow of traffic for all users. This focus on multi-modal accessibility is a testament to the evolving needs and priorities of modern urban environments.
