Paul Auster, an accomplished American writer and filmmaker, passed away at the age of 77. He was known for his contributions to New York’s cultural scene alongside icons such as Woody Allen and Lou Reed. Auster’s renowned trilogy set in New York City, which includes ‘City of Glass,’ ‘Spectres,’ and ‘The Locked Room,’ offered a unique perspective on the metropolis through the lens of a detective story and was praised by critics. His works have been translated into over 40 languages and include significant novels like ‘Moon Palace,’ ‘The Music of Chance,’ and ‘Brooklyn Follies.’

Auster completed his studies at Columbia University before spending time in Paris working as a translator. He made his literary debut with poems and short stories published in prominent literary journals before moving on to novels like ‘The Land of Last Things,’ ‘The Music of Chance,’ and ‘Timbuktu.’ In addition to his literary accomplishments, Auster also had a successful career in film, directing and screenwriting works such as ‘Smoke, co-directed with Wayne Wang, and ‘Blue in the Face.’ His latest novel, ‘Baumgartner,’ released in 2023 coincided with his illness announcement but continued to showcase his storytelling prowess. Auster’s works have been widely celebrated in Italy where they have been published by Einaudi. His legacy as a multifaceted artist continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, leaving an indelible mark on the literary and cinematic landscapes.
