The Patriots have secured another key player by agreeing to a three-year contract extension with linebacker Jahlani Tavai, as reported by ESPN. Tavai, 27, was in the final year of a two-year extension he signed in 2022 after being drafted by the Lions in the second round in 2019. He was released by Detroit at the start of the 2021 season before joining the Patriots’ practice squad and eventually earning a spot on the team.
Tavai had a standout season in 2023 with 110 total tackles, five tackles for loss, four QB hits, one sack, and two interceptions. The Patriots have been proactive this offseason in extending contracts for players entering the final year of their deals, with Tavai joining the likes of Rhamondre Stevenson, Christian Barmore, and David Andrews in agreeing to new deals.
The team is making sure to solidify its roster for the future by ensuring key players remain with the organization. With Tavai’s addition to their roster, the Patriots are now well-positioned to compete for another championship next season.
