Rishabh Pant was clearly frustrated as he walked back to the dugout after another short innings. Despite his recent struggles, Pant remains a valuable asset for India at the T20 World Cup, especially in the No.3 position. However, his unpredictability has made him a risky option when it comes to executing shots like the reverse sweep.

Pant’s aggressive style of play has been a key factor in his success at the international level, but it also means that sometimes he will succeed with risky shots and other times he will fail. Despite getting decent starts against Afghanistan and Bangladesh, Pant failed to convert them into substantial innings.

Reports suggest that Pant has been practicing the reverse sweep extensively during training sessions, indicating that he is serious about adding this shot to his arsenal. He has shown that he can execute the shot effectively, as seen when he hit a boundary off spinner Mohammed Nabi with a reverse sweep. However, against Rishad Hossain and Rashid Khan, Pant struggled to get the elevation he needed and was ultimately dismissed.

One of Pant’s most memorable reverse sweeps came against England’s James Anderson in a Test match three years ago. But currently, the shot is proving to be a high-risk option for him. Perhaps Pant could consider playing the reverse sweep later in his innings, after he has already made an impact with his aggressive stroke play. Completely abandoning the shot would restrict his ability to express himself freely while batting, which is crucial to his style of play.
