One hundred-year-old World War II veteran Harold Terens, who had spent 80 years risking his life in war, decided to celebrate his final chapter of life by getting married in the same place where it all began. He exchanged vows with his 96-year-old girlfriend, Jeanne Swerlin, in the French town of Carentan-les-Marais. The wedding took place just a few days after Terens was honored on the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings, with high-profile guests such as President Joe Biden, King Charles III of Great Britain, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and French President Emmanuel Macron in attendance.

The town of Carentan-les-Marais had been liberated from the Germans by the allies after a fierce battle during WWII. As part of the D-Day commemorations, a liberation ball will be held in the evening, with guests invited to dress in 1940s-themed clothes and soldiers from the US base nearby welcoming everyone.

Terens, a recipient of the French Legion of Honor, had spent 70 years with his first wife, Thelma, before her passing in 2018. After meeting Swerlin in 2021
