Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department reports significant growth in state’s tourism industry

Oklahoma state leaders have announced that the state’s tourism industry is experiencing significant growth. In 2022, revenue from tourism activities in Oklahoma rose from $10.5 billion to $12.8 billion, according to the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department. Executive Director Shelley Zumwalt highlighted that the increase in interest in traveling to Oklahoma in 2023 is due to the department’s close partnership with Omnitrak, a company that monitors hotel stays and events throughout the state.

Zumwalt emphasized that tourism plays a crucial role in economic development, bringing in over $833 million in state and local taxes, making it the third largest industry in Oklahoma. She described tourism as a hidden powerhouse behind the state’s economic growth.

The department works closely with Omnitrak, which monitors hotel stays and events throughout the state, to track data on tourists visiting Oklahoma. Zumwalt pointed out that there are many natural attractions to visit, such as sand dunes and waterfalls, as well as sports events happening across the state. The upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics will further boost visibility for OKC by hosting various events.

To attract more visitors to Oklahoma, Zumwalt stressed the importance of promoting tourism to residents of other states by showcasing what makes OK unique. By highlighting its natural wonders and sports scene, OK can continue to grow its tourism industry and boost its economy even further.
