In 2020, Liam Edmondson founded Offload Cumbria, a peer support mental health group aimed at helping men overcome their mental health challenges. As a mental health support worker in the NHS and someone who has struggled with complex PTSD and anxiety disorder himself, Mr. Edmondson was determined to provide accessible and effective support services for men who were not in crisis mode.

To achieve this goal, Offload Cumbria offers free talking group sessions in various locations throughout the region. These sessions provide a safe space for men to engage in open discussions and connect with others who are going through similar experiences. However, the group has recently introduced a new approach to its program – activity-led sessions that aim to enhance men’s wellbeing.

Mr. Edmondson has noticed an increase in engagement and connections among members during these activity-led sessions, which include activities such as bowling and axe throwing. By incorporating these activities into their program, Offload Cumbria hopes to create a positive environment where men can be distracted while also providing opportunities for open discussion and support.

The group’s focus on both activities and discussions has been well-received by participants, who appreciate the interactive and engaging approach that complements traditional talking therapy. Mr. Edmondson believes that activities are a vital component in supporting men’s mental health, as they provide an alternative way to engage with others and express oneself creatively.

Offload Cumbria is currently seeking funding to continue offering group activities for men over 18 experiencing mental health challenges.
