Norway’s decision to recognize Palestine as a state is the result of years of careful consideration and coordination with other countries. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store has sent a clear message to other nations that they should follow suit, and it is expected that Spain and Ireland will also take similar steps.
Norway has a long history of supporting a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians, having played a key role in mediating the Oslo Accords in 1993. These accords led to limited self-rule by the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Gaza. Last November, Norway’s parliament voted in support of recognizing Palestine as a state, urging the government to take action.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eid has emphasized the importance of finding a resolution to the conflict in Gaza, viewing recognition of a Palestinian state as a tool to facilitate progress. He has made it clear that Norway does not support a “Hamas state,” but rather a Palestinian state led by the Palestinian Authority. The goal is to establish a peaceful and sustainable solution for both parties involved.
