NIPSCO is set to enhance its gas and electric metering systems with advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) technology. This upgrade will allow for the automated and remote collection of gas metering information from around 870,000 gas meters. The installation of the Gas AMI communications module is set to begin in July 2024 and continue through the end of 2026. According to John Sabotnik, NIPSCO Director of Major Projects, this advancement will help deliver energy safely and reliably, improve operational efficiencies, and enhance the customer experience through greater visibility and improved billing processes.

By installing the Gas AMI communications module, NIPSCO will provide customers with more frequent and enhanced usage data. This will give customers greater visibility into their gas consumption, access to on-demand meter reading, and improved customer service through increased frequency of meter readings. In February 2024, NIPSCO began upgrading electric meters for 3,000 residential customers in Highland. Progress has continued with the electric AMI program, with the mass deployment of 490,000 electric meters to residential and commercial customers starting in May 2024 and expected to continue through 2027 across NIPSCO’s service area. This deployment is a significant milestone in NIPSCO’s journey towards technological advancement and grid modernization.
