On Sunday morning, a 34-year-old man was shot and killed in a Newport News apartment complex. Residents reported hearing multiple gunshots and a loud argument in the courtyard at the Seven Oak Apartments before the shooting occurred. At least one woman took cover below her windows upon hearing the gunfire, with one resident estimating more than 10 rounds being fired.

The police responded to the incident located in the 700 block of 36th Street at 2:13 a.m., after receiving an alert from the city’s ShotSpotter system which detected audio signals of shots being fired and pinpointed the location of the gunfire. No 911 calls were received from the location, according to a Newport News Police spokeswoman.

Upon arrival, officers found Wayne Hill, 34, of Hampton, lying in the grass between a row of apartments and a fence on 36th Street with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. While Hill had a Hampton address, residents of Seven Oaks Apartments indicated that he was a frequent visitor and may have lived there as well. His relatives could not be contacted at the time of the incident.

Detectives have not made any arrests in connection with the shooting and have not disclosed a possible motive for the crime yet. The shooting marks Newport News’ 10th homicide of 2024, compared to 11 at this time last year.
