Dr. Maak has recently been appointed as the president of the NBA league, where he will collaborate with the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and league medical professionals to improve player performance and prioritize their health. His primary focus will be on injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation strategies to ensure that NBA players receive top-quality medical care. In addition to his new role, Dr. Maak will continue to work as the orthopedic physician for the Utah Jazz, a position he has held since 2014 through U of U Health.

Having been a member of the NBAPA for many years, Dr. Maak brings extensive experience to his new leadership position. He has previously held positions such as chairman of the research committee and served on the executive committee as secretary treasurer and vice president. Dr. Maak is committed to advancing healthcare within the professional basketball community and feels honored to have been chosen by his peers for this leadership role.

Dr. Maak’s educational background includes graduating from Stanford University and completing his medical studies at Yale School of Medicine. He finished his orthopedic surgery residency and sports medicine fellowship in New York City, where he also worked as an assistant team physician for the New York Giants. Dr. Maak has been with U of U Health since 2012, where he currently serves as the director of the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship and the Sports, Spine, and Musculoskeletal Program
