The A’s announced that Abraham Toro has been placed on the injured list with a strained right hamstring, paving the way for Armando Alvarez to be called up from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Alvarez, who was playing with the Aviators in Tacoma, was pulled from the game around the same time as Toro left Friday night’s game against the Minnesota Twins after grounding out in the sixth inning. A’s manager Mark Kotsay confirmed that Toro’s hamstring injury would likely land him on the IL.

Alvarez, a 29-year-old infielder, was drafted by the Yankees in 2016 and has played in 700 minor league games over eight seasons. He also spent time with the San Francisco Giants last season, hitting .308 with 18 home runs in 74 games. In Triple-A this season, Alvarez has a .311 batting average with eight home runs and 33 RBIs in 47 games.
