The New York State Department of Health recently showcased their commitment to LGBTQ+ communities by participating in Pride festivities across the state. The DOH staff took part in various events, including marching in the Capital Pride Parade in Albany for the first time. State Health Commissioner, Dr. James McDonald, expressed pride in the department’s dedication to health equity and the LGBTQ+ community.

Members of the DOH engaged in Pride events in Buffalo, Capital Region BIPOC Pride, and Capital Pride 2024 in Albany. They also attended Pride Night at the Plaza, with about 70 staff members and their families marching in the Capital Pride Parade. The department’s ongoing commitment to protecting and promoting health and well-being for all communities is demonstrated through these efforts.

According to Dr. McDonald, the goal of their participation in Pride events is to educate the public about the importance of access to affirming care and supportive services for all communities. The DOH aims to eliminate stigma and ensure that all individuals can achieve optimal health. They will continue their involvement in upcoming Pride events, such as the Rochester Pride Festival and NYC Black Pride.
