On Thursday, New York City was hit by a severe thunderstorm that brought heavy rain, gusty winds and frequent lightning to the area. More than 13 million people were covered under Severe Thunderstorm Warnings during the height of the storm.

In total, 174 lightning bolts were detected in the greater New York City metro area during the storm. One of these strikes hit the One World Trade Center in Manhattan, as captured in an incredible photo by Dan Martland. Unfortunately, one person was injured when a lightning bolt struck a building along Pine Street in Manhattan. New York Fire Department officials responded to the scene and the injured person was taken to a hospital in Lower Manhattan, although the extent of their injuries was not disclosed.

The ferocious thunderstorm caused disruptions and sent locals indoors to seek shelter from the intense weather. The storm was a powerful reminder of the unpredictable and dangerous nature of severe weather events in urban areas like New York City. Residents were urged to stay indoors and take precautions until the storm passed.
