This weekend, the Science Olympiad team from I.S. 98 Bay Academy in Sheepshead Bay will be showcasing their skills at the National Science Olympiad Tournament. They are the first New York City public school to make it to this prestigious competition, where only 60 out of 6,000 middle school teams qualify to participate. The team has worked hard all year, dedicating their time to competing and studying college-level science topics in order to reach this point.

Being at nationals is not only an incredible achievement for their school, but it also serves as motivation for other schools to strive for this opportunity. One of the competing students, George Tatishvili, expressed that he is proud of his team’s accomplishments and hopes that they will inspire other schools to get involved in science education programs like Science Olympiad.

The Science Olympiad program at I.S. 98 Bay Academy is supported by School’s Out New York City, a program funded by the city Department of Youth and Community Development. This support has helped the team prepare for nationals and compete with confidence as they showcase their skills on a national stage.
