Finland has elected 15 representatives to the European Parliament in the recent EU elections. These newly-elected politicians are set to head to Brussels this week as political groups begin their meetings. Finnish parties in the European Parliament are aligned with various political groups, but changes in alignment can occur, particularly in the wing and extreme right factions.

For instance, Viktor Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary from the Fidesz party, is expected to join the ECR group, where the Finns Party also sits. Responsibilities such as committee positions and leadership roles will be distributed among these politicians in the upcoming weeks. Key positions within the EU, such as the President of the Commission, High Representative, and President of the European Council will also be allocated during this time.

Candidates for these positions include Ursula von der Leyen, Kaja Kallas, and Mario Draghi. The appointment process will face close scrutiny and negotiations among leaders of EU countries after the Midsummer summit. The upcoming term for the EU faces challenges due to shifts in power dynamics within European Parliament, notably with a rise of right-wing and extreme right parties.

Historically, majority rule in European Parliament has been held by groups such as EPP, S&D, Renew and Greens. However, with changing dynamics comes a need for stronger collaboration between different political groups to push forward legislative initiatives effectively. Europe is entering a crucial period over the next five years that must navigate external challenges such as U.S elections and growing pressures on EU states.

Collaboration among EU countries’ leaders is critical to determine Europe’s future direction amidst shifting political landscapes and increased tensions between nations. Their ability to work together effectively will be vital in addressing various challenges facing Europe during this period of uncertainty.
