A decade ago, when Joseph Sivoli moved to Florida, he was unaware of the mental health resources available to Orlando’s gay community. It wasn’t until he underwent trauma therapy a few years ago that he realized the significant benefits of counseling. This personal experience inspired him to establish Beacon Health, a nonprofit organization that plans to provide free mental health services to Central Florida’s LGBTQ community beginning in August.
Sivoli explained that individuals will be able to contact their hotline to schedule an appointment, if necessary, with referrals also available. The goal of Beacon Health is to create a safe space where community members can feel supported and receive the services they require, along with referrals to other services if necessary. Interns from the University of Central Florida will assist in delivering services to clients.
Beacon Health is organizing a fundraising event on June 29 at the Deer Creek Village Clubhouse. Those interested in supporting this cause can find more information on how to donate on their website. The organization’s mission is to provide accessible mental health services to the LGBTQ community, and they are taking steps to make that a reality. Stay tuned for updates as Beacon Health launches their services later this year.
