Albuquerque, New Mexico is gaining recognition as the next potential hotspot for quantum technology. This emerging field has already established itself in cities like Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Madison, Wisconsin; Austin, Texas; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Rochester, New York; and Raleigh, North Carolina. Quantum technology uses the physics of sub-atomic particles to solve complex problems and improve accuracy in various areas such as navigation systems and computing.
Ivan Deutsch, Director of the Center for Quantum Information and Control (CQuIC) at the University of New Mexico (UNM), has been instrumental in advancing quantum technology research at UNM since 1995. With the establishment of CQuIC in 2009, partnerships with other cutting-edge players have accelerated. Collaboration between private entities, public institutions like UNM, and the federal government is crucial to growing the impact of quantum technology.
In addition to initiatives like CQuIC, Elevate Quantum is a partnership between Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico that seeks a $75 million grant to further develop quantum technology in the region. Collaboration among different stakeholders can trigger a domino effect of research, development, and delivery of next-generation technology. This collaborative approach could help establish the Mountain West region as a leader in quantum technologies.
As Albuquerque continues to grow its presence in this field, it’s clear that collaboration is key to unlocking its full potential. The city’s strong existing tech ecosystem provides an ideal foundation for building on this momentum and creating new opportunities for innovation in quantum technology.
