The national crisis hotline is transitioning to a three-digit number, 988, in order to improve access to mental healthcare emergency services across the nation. This initiative aims to transform the way crisis care is provided and make the number easy to remember for those in need of help.

Residents of Indiana will need to dial 988 instead of 211 for mental health resources starting soon. The Be Well Crisis Helpline will be discontinued as of July 1, with the transition to the national Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. This change is part of an effort to streamline crisis response infrastructure and ensure individuals have access to the most efficient and effective mental health support.

Moving forward, individuals seeking mental health support in Indiana should call 988 for direct access to the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. The 211 service will direct callers to the 988 Lifeline starting on July 1, 2024, and trained navigators will be available to assist those in crisis or in need of emotional support. Whether calling, texting, or chatting online, individuals can receive the help they need through the 988 Lifeline.

The decision was made by Mental Health America of Indiana in partnership with the Division of Mental Health and Addiction, with the goal of providing Hoosiers with the best possible mental health resources.
