John Hendrickson, a former CEO of Perrigo with 28 years of experience, has been appointed as the new chair of University of Michigan Health-West’s board of directors. He will take over from Steve Van Andel, who has been on the hospital’s board for nearly 40 years and will remain as an emeritus member. Dr. Ronald Grifka, president of UM Health-West, praised Van Andel’s leadership and dedication, acknowledging his significant contributions to the hospital over the years.

In addition to Hendrickson’s appointment as chair, Bruce Courtade, a lawyer at Rhoades McKee, was named vice chair of the board. Dr. Grifka expressed excitement for the leadership of Hendrickson and Courtade as they work together with University of Michigan Health to enhance healthcare in West Michigan. The board will continue to collaborate with the goal of expanding access to world-class health care in the region.

Last fall, Van Andel joined the U-M Health Regional Board of Directors when Sparrow Health System integrated with the University of Michigan Health Network. The regional board oversees UM Health-West and UM Health-Sparrow hospitals, serving West Michigan and the Lansing area.

Hendrickson brings a wealth of experience to his new role as chairman, having served as CEO at Perrigo for two years before retiring in 2019. During his tenure at Perrigo, he led the company through several transformative changes and helped grow its business globally.

Courtade is also an experienced leader with a background in law and business. He previously served on the board of trustees for Grand Rapids Community College and is currently a member of several other boards in West Michigan.

With their combined expertise and leadership skills, Hendrickson and Courtade are well positioned to help guide UM Health-West through its next phase of growth and expansion.
