Hamas has responded positively to the new Israeli road map proposed by American President Joe Biden for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages. Biden called on Hamas to accept the plan, emphasizing the need to end the devastating war in Gaza. The first phase of the plan involves a six-week ceasefire and withdrawal of Israeli troops from inhabited areas of Gaza. Release of hostages is also a key part of the plan with the possibility of a permanent ceasefire if Hamas upholds its commitments.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed hope that this development would lead to lasting peace, while the German Minister of Foreign Affairs called it a “ray of hope.” The European Union also praised the proposal as realistic. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that his government’s commitment to bringing back all hostages and eliminating Hamas’ capabilities remains unwavering, while still pursuing its goals in the conflict.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh stated that their demands for a permanent ceasefire and complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza are non-negotiable. Despite international concern over civilian casualties, the conflict shows no signs of immediate resolution as both sides continue their military strategies. The situation in Gaza remains dire with significant civilian casualties and destruction due to ongoing military operations like Rafah, where many civilians have fled. The discovery of Hamas weapons and tunnels in Rafah has fueled this ongoing military offensive.

The United Nations has repeatedly condemned Israel’s actions against Palestinians in Gaza, including its use of excessive force against civilians during protests and its construction of settlements on occupied land. However, Israel argues that these actions are necessary for its security given years of rocket attacks from Gaza by extremist groups like Hamas.

The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians has been going on for decades, with tensions flaring up periodically over disputes such as settlement building or military actions by both sides.

In recent years, there have been several attempts at peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, including talks facilitated by former US President Barack Obama’s administration under his “peace process” initiative.

However, these efforts have largely failed due to disagreements over issues such as borders, territorial rights, and refugee rights.

As a result, many Palestinians continue to live in poverty-stricken conditions in refugee camps or occupied areas like Gaza Strip.
