President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that investors are interested in constructing an alternate route exclusively for freight trains as part of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT) project. If completed, this new route would reduce transfer times between the ports of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, and Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz from seven to four hours, providing a faster connection between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

Unlike the current one built during the Porfiriato era and rehabilitated in the current term, the new route would feature tunnels and viaducts to make the journey faster. President López Obrador emphasized that the CIIT is not a complement but an alternative to the Panama Canal for moving goods between Asia and the West through the two oceans. He expressed confidence in the project’s future success and strong interest from investors.

The proposed route would confine the existing one and significantly reduce travel time from six to seven hours to three or four hours by utilizing modern technology such as tunnels and viaducts. By streamlining the journey for freight trains, this new route would improve efficiency in transporting goods.

Progress has already been made in the CIIT project with port modernization, infrastructure improvements, and upcoming development projects. President López Obrador also highlighted its importance to maintain control over natural resources while avoiding issues such as water scarcity and mining concessions in future plans.

As this project advances forward, he emphasized careful management of resources and strategic planning will be essential for its success. The CIIT aims to enhance transportation connectivity between Pacific and Atlantic oceans, providing a valuable alternative to existing routes for freight trains.

In summary, President López Obrador announced that investors are interested in constructing an alternate route exclusively for freight trains as part of Interoceanic Corridor of Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT). This new route aims to reduce transfer times between ports Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, Coatzacoalcos Veracruz from 7 hours to 4 hours using tunnels and viaducts instead of traditional railways. The project has already made progress with port modernization but it needs careful management of resources with strategic planning for success.
