The state Senate has recently approved Valerie Kato’s appointment as the deputy director of the Hawaii Department of Health. In her new role, Kato will be working closely with Health Director Dr. Kenneth Fink and will be responsible for overseeing the administrative offices of the department, which includes various DOH agencies and district health offices.

Kato brings a wealth of experience to her new position, having previously served as the supervising deputy of the state attorney general’s health division and as a first deputy attorney general. Prior to her government roles, Kato spent 17 years in private practice. She holds a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., and a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Dr. Fink expressed his excitement about having Kato join the DOH team, highlighting her expertise, leadership skills, and high level of energy. Her appointment is expected to further strengthen the department and its ability to serve the people of Hawaii effectively.”
