Meanwhile, there is talk about a possible Championship Division coming to Florida. The Florida High School Athletic Association’s Board of Directors is set to vote on adding an eight-team Championship Division for all team sports at their upcoming meeting. Board Member Ryan Smith, athletic director at Benjamin in Palm Beach Gardens, is proposing this new division in an effort to enhance competitive equity in the FHSAA State Series.

If approved, the Championship Division would consist of the top eight teams from the MaxPreps rankings, regardless of classification. These teams would be divided into two, four-team sub-brackets based on their seeding, with a double-elimination tournament leading up to the state semifinal games. The state semifinals and championship would be single elimination matches.

The addition of a Championship Division could potentially have a significant impact on high school sports in Florida. As senior high school football recruiting reporter for the USA Today Florida Network, Jon Santucci will continue to provide updates on this story and more.
