After being fired as the Chargers head coach, Brandon Staley was considered for several defensive coordinator positions but did not land any of them. However, he interviewed with the 49ers and was offered a different role on Kyle Shanahan’s staff. The 49ers confirmed that Staley will serve as the assistant head coach/defense and he spoke to reporters for the first time in his new position on Wednesday.

In his new role, Nick Sorenson will be the coordinator, and Shanahan mentioned that Staley will be a valuable member of the staff and will serve as a sounding board for Sorenson. Staley expressed that the opportunity to work with Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch aligns with his leadership style and provides a chance to be part of a team that can compete for a championship. He sees this new role as an opportunity for growth and improvement.

Staley acknowledged that taking a step back was necessary after his brief stint as a head coach with the Chargers, where they fell short in critical moments. By joining a team with a different reputation like the 49ers, Staley believes he can learn and grow to eventually pursue another head coaching opportunity in the future. The alignment of values and goals with the 49ers organization has energized Staley and he sees this as a chance to start fresh and make an impact on a team striving for success.
