In late April, the Denver Broncos made the decision to sign UTSA defensive lineman Brandon Matterson to their roster. Standing at 6-2 and weighing 295 pounds, Matterson had just finished his fifth year as a senior with the Roadrunners before joining the Broncos. Throughout his college career, he played in a total of 59 games, starting in 20 of them. He accumulated an impressive 100 total tackles, with 45 being solo and 56 assisted, as well as 15.5 tackles for loss and seven-and-a-half sacks.
Matterson’s academic achievements were also recognized during his time at UTSA. He was named a four-time Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll member and received honors such as honorable mention All-Conference USA in 2020 for his play on the defensive line. In 2023, he was recognized as a third-team All-American Athletic Conference performer and was included on the Lombardi Award Midseason Watch List.
As Matterson prepares for training camp, it is noted that he will face tough competition for playing time. The recent acquisition of former New York Jet, John Franklin-Myers, in a draft-day trade has added depth to the defensive line, potentially limiting Matterson’s opportunities.
