The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced the launch of new airfield surveillance systems at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport starting June 30. These cutting-edge systems are aimed at reducing the risk of runway incidents by enhancing air traffic controllers’ situational awareness. With this technology, controllers will have visibility of surface traffic at airports that lack surface surveillance tools, enabling them to better monitor aircraft and ADS-B equipped vehicles moving around the airport.

The new systems will be represented as icons on an airport map showing runways, taxiways, hold ramps, and other key areas. The FAA has implemented multiple safety measures to protect travelers during the upcoming summer season, and this new airfield surveillance system is an additional layer of protection being introduced at the Austin airport.

In May 2024, the Austin airport experienced its busiest month ever in terms of passenger traffic, with nearly 2.07 million travelers passing through. This milestone marks a significant peak in the airport’s history, with only a handful of other months having surpassed the 2 million passenger mark. The growth in passenger numbers underscores the need for advanced safety measures like this new airfield surveillance system to ensure the well-being of passengers and staff.
