The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) will be closing down on July 1, with two new agencies set to take its place. The Department of Public Health (DPH) will oversee DHEC’s public health and healthcare quality programs, while the Department of Environmental Services (DES) will oversee air quality, coastal management, and land and waste management.

The Department of Public Health (DPH) is set to launch on July 1, taking over the public health and healthcare quality programs that were previously under the umbrella of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). Dr. Edward Simmer, the Acting Director of DPH, will hold a press conference on Monday to announce the launch and provide important information about the changes. The event will take place at 9 a.m. at the Mills-Jarret Building at 2100 Bull Street.
