Netflix is phasing out its cheapest ad-free plan and requiring users in certain regions, such as the UK and Canada, to choose a new plan to continue their subscription. The company has been considering changes to its subscription plans for months, including introducing a more affordable ad-based plan, ending shared accounts, and increasing the cost of other subscription options.

In recent months, Netflix announced that it would no longer offer the ad-free Basic plan to new subscribers in Canada and the UK. Shortly after, the company confirmed that it would permanently remove this plan from its offerings. Reddit users in these countries reported receiving an email from Netflix notifying them of the end of the ad-free Basic plan.

The change has also been reflected in the app’s interface upon opening, and Netflix’s website states that the Basic plan has been discontinued. Users are now required to choose a different subscription plan to continue accessing content or else Netflix will suspend their profiles. Subscribers must now select from the ad-supported plan (standard with ads), the standard plan without ads, or the Premium plan. The timeline for when this change will be implemented in other regions is currently unknown.
