As the weather warms up and you’re ready to hit the water, it’s crucial to prioritize safety measures. Bill Thompson, co-owner of Downwind Sports and an U.P. outdoor outfitter, emphasizes this point. Thompson stresses the importance of having the right equipment when kayaking on the Great Lakes. According to him, sea kayaks with two bulkheads on each end are necessary for big water like the Great Lakes as they help keep the boat afloat if it flips over. Kayaks with only one bulkhead are more suitable for inland lakes or rivers.

Thompson also advises being prepared for changing conditions on the water. He recommends always wearing a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) or lifejacket that fits properly and is zipped up. Additionally, using a spray skirt can help keep excess water out of the boat and provide protection from bugs and the sun. Thompson suggests clipping a whistle to your lifejacket to signal for help in case of an emergency.

When paddling, Thompson advises paddling for conditions, particularly focusing on water temperature rather than air temperature. He recommends checking NOAA website before heading out onto the water for wave height information. Thompson emphasizes being aware of how quickly conditions can change on the Great Lakes and taking precautions such as paddling with partners or informing others of your launch location can prevent dangerous situations while kayaking on this magnificent body of water.
