In recent news, the Sempervirens Fund land trust has launched a new program called Trails Rx, which aims to promote health and wellness through guided trails in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The program offers detailed guides to five trails, including the Six Bridges Trail in Butano State Park, Atkinson Bluff Trail in Año Nuevo State Park, and trails in Big Basin, Castle Rock, and Henry Cowell Redwoods State Parks.

Sara Barth, the executive director of Sempervirens Fund, emphasized the connection between the well-being of the forests and the communities they serve. She stated that “Nature has a powerful ability to heal and rejuvenate both physically and mentally.”

Trails Rx encourages people to immerse themselves in nature by providing prompts along each trail that highlight wellness activities. For example, on the Atkinson Bluff Trail, hikers are invited to take a few minutes to observe their surroundings in silence. The program also includes information and links to research about the health benefits of the suggested activities. The Six Bridges Trail is noted for its ability to reduce blood pressure and depression while boosting the immune system.

Sempervirens wellness advisor Suzanne Bartlett Hackenmiller emphasized that spending time outdoors can have numerous health benefits beyond just physical fitness. She stated that “Nature has a healing power on both body and soul.” Countless studies have shown that spending time outdoors improves physical health and mental well-being. In addition to wellness benefits, the webpages also offer maps, parking information, trail difficulty details, and other features of each destination.

Curtis Chan, deputy health officer for San Mateo County agrees with these sentiments stating that clear guidance and encouragement to walk in nature can promote both physical and mental health.”
