The Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is set to observe its second annual ‘Stand Down to Save Lives’ day on May 22. This national campaign aims to encourage the mining community to take proactive measures in preventing fatalities and injuries in the workplace. This year, the event takes on added significance following a recent coal mine fatality that occurred in Wyoming County, West Virginia on May 16.

During ‘Stand Down to Save Lives’ day, miners, operators, and unions are encouraged to pause their work for a brief moment to raise awareness about the importance of safety and health in mining operations across the country. MSHA leaders and staff will visit mines nationwide as part of their ongoing efforts to educate and engage with the industry in order to reduce accidents and illnesses.

Assistant Secretary for Mine Safety and Health Chris Williamson emphasized the need for collaboration between all stakeholders in ensuring the health and safety of miners. He stated, “We succeed when we work together, and miners are safer and healthier as a result.” The mining community is encouraged to participate in this important event by learning more about Stand Down to Save Lives 2024 on the MSHA website.
