The idea of turning off all radars to avoid detection by extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) is a hypothetical threat that is not being seriously considered. According to Shostak, completely hiding from potential ETIs is unrealistic and would not be practical in the grand scheme of things.
Furthermore, the comparison between hiding in a forest and hiding in space is flawed due to the vastness of the universe. With its infinite expanse, it’s highly unlikely that hostile ETIs would preemptively attack each other due to the vast distances between them. Resources in space are abundant, so competition among ETIs would be minimal.
The fact that Earth is a young and vulnerable technological society suggests that not all ETIs would be inherently aggressive. If there are intelligent extraterrestrial beings out there, they would likely have access to countless worlds, asteroids, and stars, making hostility towards Earth unnecessary. This implies that if there are intelligent extraterrestrial beings, they may not pose a threat to humanity.
