Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared victory in the parliamentary elections, despite his party, the BJP, losing its majority in Parliament. Addressing supporters at the party headquarters in Delhi, Modi expressed gratitude to his supporters and election workers who worked tirelessly in challenging conditions. He praised the democracy in India as a model of credibility and efficiency.

Modi acknowledged a time of despair and disillusionment among young people in 2014 and emphasized the responsibility to lead the country out of despair. He expressed gratitude for being given a second chance in 2019 and pledged to prioritize the fight against corruption and poverty in his new government. The results showed that Modi’s alliance had won the parliamentary elections in India, securing a majority with at least 272 seats in parliament. While the BJP did not achieve a majority on its own, the National Democratic Alliance had enough seats to form a government. The main opposition party, Congress, won 88 seats and led in eleven other constituencies, marking a significant increase from their previous performance.

A record-breaking 642 million Indians participated in the elections over six weeks, with turnout slightly lower than in previous years due to factors like heat wave. Despite these challenges, the results of the elections signaled both a victory for Modi’s alliance and a strengthened opposition presence in parliament.
